Derik Badman, “Flying Chief,” Abstract Comics, 2009.

Abstract Comics is a very unusual anthology, exploring new ways of suggesting narrative without resort to figurative images or text. We particularly liked a couple of “stories” in there, including Derik Badman’s “Flying Chief,” which was created by copying only the backgrounds of an old Tarzan comic by Jesse Marsh, revealing the mystery and formal elegance lurking even in old pulp comics.

Age: teen or adult, only because it takes a certain sophistication to slow down and really absorb abstract comics.
