Video: Howard Chaykin on teaching Marvel “bootcamp” workshop

I had the pleasure of meeting Howard Chaykin last week in Minnesota for the MCBA’s SpringCon. We had several great conversations (more on what I learned about his writing method to come), but I was particularly interested to hear that he’s been teaching in an unexpected venue: the Marvel Bullpen. He and Klaus Jansen spend 3 days every 6 months in the Marvel offices giving what-for to 5 artists under contract with Marvel. Main areas of concern: narrative structure (visual narrative) and professional practice. Knowing Klaus a bit, and now meeting Howard, I have to say, I wish I could take that class. I also spoke with someone who actually HAD taken that class, Steve Kurth.

Howard and Klaus do now occasionally offer a version of the program to aspiring cartoonists, most recently at the Baltimore Comicon.

Thanks for sharing! Audio sounded okay considering the environment.

Sounded intensive yet, as Howard and Steve, it is stuff that should be natural (narration, storytelling, etc.) The old adage, “even when you think you know everything – there is more to learn…” I was impressed at both men’s comments about fear – the basic, “am I compentent” or “do I have what it takes” A lot of what I read (your material and others) centers about core belief about yourself and your abilities. “Do you have the drive to complete the race, etc.?” A lot of the self-help follows the same core actions/practices.

Another thing is the critisisms – I know my son, Josiah is looking for it but I think he is ready for more intensive critiques. He received good feedback from the art contest a few weeks ago. In fact, his art teacher was impressed that he scored well from a teacher that teaches high school. The high school teacher/judge offered good critiques and encouraged him to keep drawning!

I was looking over my comic and looking at my progression – and I want to thank you for inspiring and encouraging me. I know you don’t do it directly but it comes across when you post material like this.

Dean–You and Klaus were how Howard and I first made a connection. You know of course he speaks very highly of you!
