Flickr: Jess and Matt report on the DNC2000

Digging through old photos is fun, but I also realized there are lots that have some comics, cartoonist, or comics scene relevance, so I decided to start posting them on our Flickr feed. I don’t expect the project to go quickly, but there’s a lot we’ll be doing over the next few months.

Here’s the first set, from waaay back in 2000, when I was invited out to the DNC 2000 (in LA) by the LA Weekly to do a comic strip every day for their special “LA Weekly Daily”. I had never before (and have never since) tried to draw a daily strip, and certainly not one where I had to interview before writing it. If you’ve never been to a national political convention, you won’t realize, but all the action is in the evenings, when it can get on TV. And I had to do all my interviewing and research during the day to make my 10 pm deadline (which I barely did, even with Matt doing backgrounds).

This is a particularly sad convention: Al Gore was the candidate, and we know how that worked out…

Also: I think this was the first time I ever used a digital camera. I borrowed it from my stepmother. Got my own for xmas that year.

You can view the photos right here, but if you use the little four-arrow pop-out button that shows up at the bottom after you press play, you’ll get the benefit of some explanatory captions.

My comics, the three of them I can find, follow the photos in this set.
