Mastering Comics: it’s finally here!

After years of labor, we are happy to announce that we hold an actual, printed copy of Mastering Comics, our follow up to Drawing Words & Writing Pictures in our hands. Official release date is May 8, but we’ll have copies to show off (but not sell, unfortunately) at MoCCA Art Fest April 28-29. Watch this space for info on a giveaway contest for MoCCA.

And even though the official date is the 8th, we’re going to have copies for sale at TCAF May 5-6! We can’t wait to see what you all make of it.

    To Matt and Jessica,

First and foremost a huge congratulations on the recent completion and publication of the ‘Mastering Comics’ book.

Secondly I’ve just finished reading up on your fabulous ‘Drawing Words & Writing Pictures’ epic. I only discovered your book last month and it took around 3 weeks to have it shipped to Western Australia.

I loved reading the chapters and I love how the book was laid out. The characters used to help students (groups and ronins alike) on the tutorials was a treat and a clever tool to add towards the learning process.

Nevertheless I’m definitely buying your next book (ordering it as I speak) and hope to spread the good word about your education of comics to others who may approach me for basic comic making advice.

I’m in the process of accumulating my knowledge and experience on drawing comics (been doing it for a hobby for years and I’m lovin’ it) and applying the stuff I’ve learnt from Scott McCloud’s books, Mr. Brubaker’s ‘Making Comics’ site, your dw-wp book, and getting inspiration from my favourite graphic novels of recent years to help jump start my next project – cursedwombat.com

Nevertheless keep up the amazing work and thanks again for the insight, entertainment and inspiration. *thumbs up*

    Kind regards,

    Elson ‘Darkspeeds’ Wong

P.S. Oh and I also just finished reading ‘La Perdida’ – exceptional work Jessica. The drama was tense and the human expressions and interactions were impeccable. A joy to read.

I was pleased to find your new book at my local bookstore while taking my lunch break last week. I purchased the first one some time ago and now added this second one to my collection. I am hoping to make time to go through the pages of both of your books and teach myself the processes you present. Thank you for the books, and the opportunity to learn these new skills. I hope to one day produce my own graphic novel. Thanks!
