Notables 2010: Mark Chiarello, et al.

Mark Chiarello (editor), Wednesday Comics, nos. 1-6. 2009

Wednesday Comics was either a bold experiment, a trip down nostalgia trail, or perhaps a bit of a sandbox for DC comics. Maybe all of the above. It was a 12-issue series, printed on newsprint, at the size of a large daily newspaper, so that it resembled a Sunday comics section. Each monthly issue had one page of each ongoing story, so, again, there was the feel of a mammoth comics section full of the now-mostly-gone adventure serials of yore. Unusual creators chose characters from someplace (sometimes a deep, hidden place) in the DC stable, and told stand-alone stories with them. The best of these utilized the unusual format in some way, and told stories readable and entertaining even to those completely unfamiliar with the DC universe.

The link is for the bound edition of Wednesday comics, which ran 12 issues. You could probably find individual issues in back issue bins at comics stores. (We only put issues 1-6 in the Notables because those were the issues that came out in the eligibility period for the Best American Comics 2010. )

We liked a lot of the stories, but some of our faves were:

METAMORPHO written by Neil Gaiman with art by Michael Allred

ADAM STRANGE written and illustrated by Paul Pope

SGT. ROCK written by Adam Kubert with art by Joe Kubert

Age: grades 5-6
