Notables 2010: Darwyn Cooke and Richard Stark

Darwyn Cooke and Richard Stark, Parker: The Hunter, 2009.

The Hunter is the first of four planned adaptations of Richard Stark’s hard-boiled Parker novels, and it’s a stunner. Anyone who’s seen Cooke’s art will realize what a great match he is for the material. His trademark 1960’s-influenced style, swoopy brush work, classy color (here just black and a spot), and iconic character design line right up with the cool, murderous Parker. The first 20 pages of this story are a much-lauded nearly-silent sequence that introduces the story in powerful cinematic style, and translating the words to images might even suit the reserved spirit of the (anti-) hero even better than the original.

Age: Adult.
