C.F., Powr Mastrs, no. 2. 2009
Cartoonist/musician C.F. (Christopher Forgues)’s Powr Mastrs appears to be a Lord-of-the-Rings scale epic that is just in its opening stages. The scenes so far appear episodic encounters between a variety of characters, human and otherwise, yet the more you read the more you see the stage being set for what I hope will be a long and exciting story. C.F.’s pages exhibit a less-is-more approach to cartooning built from deadweight pencil lines, with color sections that confirm outsider artist Henry Darger as a major influence.
Age: Adult. I wouldn’t recommend teaching this in a high school class, though I also know that if I’d discovered this book at age 18 it would have been a mind-altering experience (and we’re seeing a lot of young cartoonists emuating CF already).

You’re not alone. the other day I read a Best American submission that read like CF junior, and it wasn’t the first time. When you’re that good, you inspire a lot of imitation. Can’t fault their taste, though!
