Days 3 & 4: Comic Kraze @ the Wolfsonian

Day 3 at the Wolfsonian workshop was all about layout and lettering. See a wrap up here. Gonzalo, assisting with the class, shot a bunch of nice video that I hope to have time to edit into something useful soon.

Once we’d gone over basic layout and lettering skills, we talked about this week’s main project: a one sheet micro-mini utilizing a real location in Miami Beach. We figured out the proportions for a 150% larger original size, and the students laid out 8 pages in their sketchbooks, and went out drawing with Caiphus in the afternoon.

Day 4 was dedicated to getting on the computers. I demoed scanning for black linework, and everyone scanned one panel of our panel lottery story from Day 2 to practice cleaning up pencils with a levels adjustment layer. Then we created InDesign templates for the minicomic. The plan is, the kids will finish that art, scan it, paste it into an InDesign template, and print it out…by tomorrow afternoon. The weekend is for making photocopies and folding minis. We’ll trade minis with the whole class on Monday.
